Uppity Up Up Upgrade

I installed the Fedora Core 2 upgrade on my trusty laptop today...

So far...so good.

Details on my Fedora adventures later.

Downloaded the four .iso's for Fedora Core 2 because a recent change to Zap2it.com meant that I was no longer getting updated listings for Mythtv and they have upgraded myth to .15, so hell, why not upgrade everything (and the latest linux kernel is supposed to have some nice speed improvements), but after reading some of the myth user archives, it looks like the latest Fedora release does not play nice with Nvidia cards, some aspects of the Mythtv program and perhaps other drivers I would need. Thought you should know, just in case.

Ok, dunno if you really want to install it or not. There are plenty of fixes for nVidia and Fedora Core 2 now.

First you need to either A) Recompile the Kernal with an 8K stack or B) go here and download this RPM, install it and set as default http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/wlan/full/downloads-fc2-kernel-i686.php

Then depending on how much fuss you want you can either set up the "Official" nVidia driver from here http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-5336/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run
(command line is "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run")
or
Download the Fedora Core 1 RPM (from fedora) or set one of these up for additional package management (http://rpm.livna.org/ or http://atrpms.net/)

The nVidia download is the easiest to setup, updates are done by hand, the webpage rpm methods would update with yum or synaptic. atrpms.net has a handy synaptic install if you want to try that.

With those installed, nVidia now plays nice with Core 2 and mythTV should rock.
