Adventures in iPaqing
I?ve been in charge of PocketPC and other handheld support at work for a while now, but I have quite a ways to go before mastering this particular avenue of support. The Pocket PC OS is extremely easy to maneuver around in, but there are several ?under the hood? features I need to familiarize myself with in order to have a firm handle on things. I want to remain current and have similar applications and features as our users, so that equates to a few minor upgrades.
Almost all support calls are related to wireless access, so after punching around for a bit, ta dah, they?re up and running and my support is finalized. Considering I had no wireless connectivity on my iPaq, I placed a request for a compact flash card and an expansion pack to get me going. It?s certainly not as sleek or sexy as the newer models, but it does the job. I also requested approval for an upgrade to Pocket PC 2003 (I am currently running 2002). After receiving the disc, I set about to upgrade my OS, but after several attempts, I continued to receive the following error:
Error 100 : Incompatible image
The ROM image that you are trying to use is not designed to work with your iPAQ Pocket PC. These are the characteristics of your iPAQ Pocket PC :
Model : iPAQ 3800
ROM Version : 2.15
Language : English
The selected image information :
Model : iPAQ 3800
ROM Version : 3.00
Language : English
Please check the Compaq Web site and download the correct ROM upgrade.
Naturally, I checked the Compaq\HP site for an updated ROM image, but alas, version 2.15 was the latest available on their site. So I set about researching the issue and discovered I had the wrong disc. Apparently, the 3800 Series handhelds have two upgrade discs available; With Bluetooth support and without. My iPaq has Bluetooth, so it?s quite obvious, I have the wrong disc. It should be easy to get a new disc, correct dear reader? Not so, not so. After futzing around the HP site, it was quite difficult to find anything to point me in the proper direction. Fortunately, HP has a live online support forum for me to flock to and get some answers in a fairly immediate fashion. I have never used live online tech support, so it was quite refreshing. I typed in my issue, stated I believe I have the wrong disc and that solution was confirmed by my friendly tech, Manjunath.
Now if it were only M-F, 8:00-6:00, I would be on my way to a nifty upgrade.
:::sigh:::

Hah. Eat that! :)
And at least you don't have to wait three months for a new PC, like some people - it's only a weekend

Couldn't resist looking for the upgrade. About 30 seconds on HP.com ( hp.com -> Support&Drivers -> Handheld devices -> iPaq Pocket PCs -> h3800 series -> h3815 -> download drivers -> Order MS Pocket PC Upgrade) yields: http://h30094.www3.hp.com/searchresults.asp?store_id=8&search_id=71&dept_id=1084&dsc=pocket+pc+upgrades&C=HPSMBCtr_ppcupgrade&N=D_I_DR_X_T_x_GenericNVP&R=HP_SMBCtr_O&T=ad
Which contains two upgrades for the 3800 series - 2003 Upgrade and 2003 BT Upgrade.
No, I'm not showing off my red cape. I've just been to the HP site before and can follow their twisted mindset, so I figured I'd let you know where to find that stuff in the future.
What boggles the mind is the fact that you can't download a CD image. What's up with that? We all want instant gratification!
(In case you catch this in time - they say they ship within one-three days, so if you overnight it now, it'll be there on Monday...)

Hate to swoop the cape out from under ya there, groby, but finding the upgrade itself wasn't an issue (although I appreciate the effort). HP sent out several incorrect discs, despite correct orders. From what I have read in support forums and the like, I am certainly not alone in this lil snafu.
One of the reasons I choose to participate in the online support, was to find out if indeed, I could download the proper files. Unfortunately, I received the answer I expected....no.
I will place my call on Monday and get my replacement disc, overnighted, for free. It's my right as a user to demand superior service :)

Ah, but the cape is the way, not the goal, young grasshopper.

Did you ever find a fix? I'm in the same boat. When I try to upgrade, it complains that my device is a yyyyyyyy (with dots over them) and not an iPAQ 3800.
Tech support is not helpful.

Ramki,
It's quite possible they sent you the wrong CD. Does your iPaq have Bluetooth capability or no? If not, you may need to try the same resolution Alan Clegg used. Let me know and I will email you the other fix.

Ramki,
Check the contents of the following directory on your upgrade CD:
\HP\APPS\RUU
If it lists this file SP_H3800_NBT_L.exe, you have the non-bluetooth upgrade and need the bluetooth edition of the CD from Compaq. If you have this file, SP_H3800_BT_L.exe then you need to get the non-bluetooth CD from Compaq. You can call 800-888-0292 for a replacement CD.
Good luck!

I have the same error message 100. think its because i used the stupid upgrade from the net to go from 2002 to 2003 and now bluetooth doesnt work. so i buy the upgrade disc coz the hp live support blokie says it'll fix it but i get that message. I only wanted to get my bloody sd wi-fi 256MB card to work properly and after all this i discover it isn't actually compatible!!! even tho the sandisk website says it is with a rom update!!
anyway, off to d/l wwe_h3900_BTa that someone says will sort this.. will find out soon.
