Now I Just Feel Pity
Last night I was angry and confused. Now, at this moment, my heart aches with absolute pity for "The Little Fan That Could". I most certainly feel for the guy given the fact that The Smoking Gun, along with the Chicago Sun Times, has published not only this man's name, but where he works and other personal information.
Godspeed, Mr. Steve Bartman, Godspeed indeed.

while I wish all sorts of hurt on the guy, publishing his personal info is just low. I think the Sun Times should have known better. I don't expect much from The Smoking Gun, but a legit news agency should have kept their fucking mouths shut. I hope he sues their asses.

My heart aches with ya, sistah. Hopefully, the famed short attention span of the average American will kick in and all will be forgotten by next week. I'm sure the media will find some bloody little tid-bit to feed us in the next couple of days that'll force our minds off the whole debacle. For the sake of us all, I hope it doesn't involve poor Steve Bartman.
For now, let's generate some joy juice for the Cubbies. Go Cubs!

I don't see what he could sue them for... they didn't lie about him. It's not libel or slander.

How about invasion of privacy? They had no right to publish his info. Legally, it may be shaky ground, but everyone knows the poor guy is going to probably have to move now. I just hate to see people getting rammed like this. In the end, it was just a baseball game, and they're using him to sell papers. Not cool.

"In the end, it was just a baseball game, and they're using him to sell papers."
Dude, they use everybody to sell papers. That's what they do. Sell papers.

Yes, but if you're not a figure of public interest (which he's not), the paper better has a model release form of you on file.
I doubt he signed that. There's probably a default waiver when you buy a Cubs ticket. Posting his private information is very likely not covered by it, though.
My guess is they settle out of court. Sun Times sold more, and he uses the money to pay for his relocation to Florida - everybody wins.

Well, I gotta say, I stopped seeing the SunTimes as a "legit news agency" a loooooong time ago. It's up there with The Weekly World News in my book just for thier fanatical headlines.
Printing Barman's name and info was just typical for the SunTimes to do. (Not that the Trib is much better, but they at least omitted his name in the first release)
My heart goes out to this guy, because he's got so many people blaming him for the loss, instead of blaming the cubs. I bet if we try hard enough, we can find that he's also behind the whole West Nile Virus epidemic also. ;-)
GO CUBS!!!!! LET'S GET IT TONIGHT!!!!

While I disagree with the Sun-Times' choice to publish the fan's name and other details before he came out publicly with a statement, I agree with Vince that there are no legal grounds to sue. There's no law barring "invasion of privacy," vaguely defined.
